Born in England and educated at Cambridge University, Clothier came to the United States in 1964 as a participant in the Writer's Workshop at the University of Iowa. He graduated with a PH.D in Comparative Literature, and came to Los Angeles in 1968 to teach at the University of Southern California. He was subsequently Dean and Director of Otis Art Institute, and was Dean of Fine and Communication Arts at Loyola-Marymount University before leaving academia to devote full time to his first love, writing.
The recipient of fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, Clothier was honored for his contribution to the arts in Los Angeles as a recipient of the L.A. Artcore 17th Annual Awards. He has appeared as a guest on numerous radio and television shows, and serves in a leadership capacity in The ManKind Project, a world-wide organization of men.
